Any U.S. Armed Forces veteran who has a 100 percent military disability and is eligible to receive a grant from the U.S. government toward the purchase of a vehicle may obtain DV plates. No fees are required for the first set of plates.

NOTE: Vehicles displaying DV plates may occupy areas specifically reserved for use by handicapped persons. Parking meter fees and time limitations are also waived, except at meters, signs or other markings with time limitations of 30 minutes or less.

Currently Registered Vehicle

  • First-time issuance
    No Fee - 1st set of plates
    $78 - 2nd set of plates
  • Current plates expire within 90 days
    $29 - 1st set of plates ($29 replacement fee)
    $107 - 2nd set of plates ($78 registration fee + $29 replacement fee)
  • Current plates do not expire within 90 days
    $29 - 1st set of plates ($29 replacement fee)
    $29 - 2nd set of plates ($29 replacement fee)
  • Annual renewal
    No Fee - 1st set of plates
    $78 - 2nd set of plates

Newly Acquired Vehicle

  • First-time issuance
    $65 - 1st set of plates (No registration fee + $65 title fee)
    $143 - 2nd set of plates ($78 registration fee + $65 title fee)

(NOTE: to switch from a current random-numbered Disabled Veteran license plates to a vanity/personalized Disabled Veteran license plates will cost $29 replacement fee.)

To Apply

  • One must provide a letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs verifying that you:

    • are 100 percent military service disabled,
    • are eligible to receive a grant from the U.S. government toward the purchase of a vehicle, or
    • have received a grant from the U.S. government toward the purchase of a vehicle.

Availability

  • Disabled Veteran license plates are multi-year and may be displayed on passenger vehicles, trucks and vans weighing 8,000 pounds or less and Sport Utility Vehicles.

Renewal Methods

  • The no fee Disabled Veteran license plates must be renewed in Springfield. Apply in person or mail the proper documentation to:

  • Only the second set of Disabled Veteran license plates can be renewed online, by mail, touch-tone phone, or visit a Driver Services facility.
