Any Illinois resident who is retired from any military branch in the United States may apply for Armed Forces Retired plates.

Currently Registered Vehicle

  • First-time issuance - $78
    ($78 Registration fee)
  • Current plates expire within 90 days - $107
    ($78 registration fee + $29 replacement fee)
  • Current plates do not expire within 90 days - $29
    ($29 replacement fee)
  • Annual renewal - $78
    ($78 registration fee)

Newly Acquired Vehicle

  • First-time issuance - $143
    ($143 title/registration fee)

(NOTE: to switch from a current random-numbered Armed Forces Retired license plates to a vanity/personalized Armed Forces Retired license plates will cost $29 replacement fee.)

To Apply

  • one must provide a DD Form 2 or a Military ID showing retirement at the time of your request. Members of the reserves and guard who have not reached the age of 60 must submit a copy of their DD Form 2 and documentation showing transfer to retired status.
  • The request can only be processed in Springfield. Apply in person or mail the proper documentation to:

Availability

  • Retired Armed Forces license plates are multi-year and may be displayed on passenger vehicles, trucks and vans weighing 8,000 pounds or less and Sport Utility Vehicles.
